Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal were detained in Iran on July 31, 2009, while hiking in the mountains of Iraqi Kurdistan near the Ahmed Awa waterfall, a local attraction. There are conflicting news reports about whether Iranian forces entered Iraq to arrest them or they strayed across the poorly marked border by mistake. None of the hikers speak Persian and they had absolutely no intention of going to Iran. The three friends, all graduates of UC Berkeley, entered northern Iraq with visas from Turkey on July 28 and had planned to spend five days visiting the area. A fourth friend, Shon Meckfessel, had stayed behind in Sulaimaniya when Shane, Sarah and Josh set out on their hike because he was feeling unwell.
